Hallways are communal passages used by students and staff alike to get from place to place during the school day. Unfortunately, these shared spaces too often become clogged by well-meaning students who feel the need to stop dead in their tracks and hold banal conversations about a trifling subject.

If a few small groups of comrades pause for a few brief seconds to discuss the weather, there would be no problem. After all, the hallways are pretty wide. Unfortunately, the copious width of our school’s passageways does not compensate for the oblivious groups of nine, who feel the sudden urge to halt, and expect the entire world to do the same. Neither does it accommodate the groups of 15 who feel the need to stop and discuss the latest episode of a pointless reality show. A student, eager to get to his or her respective class, should never have to navigate through a human labyrinth. But then again, hallways are shared spaces, and who am I to question the rights my fellow colleagues seem to believe they are indebted with?

Nevertheless, when I have one minute to rush to my 4th block class, I don’t want to be delayed by a great wall of numbskulls. The hallways should be characterized by constant motion, not the stagnation so often experienced.

The bottom line: no one group of students owns the hallways. You don’t own the hallways, so you aren’t entitled to behave as if you do. A hallway is not a pavilion, a playground, or the cafeteria. If your posse has the need to block the hallway to joke about how awful someone’s hair looks, resist it. If you want to form a large group of 20 to compare shoes in the cafeteria, be my guest. Just remember: you may think the hallway belongs to you, but it doesn’t. The sooner you accept that fact, the better for everyone.

Though the Mansfield hockey team has had a rough start this season, it has turned around with a win against Martin 3-2. This victory is due partially to returning player Jimmy Nemeth, who is recovering from ACL surgery. Nemeth was out much of the season with a knee injury.

“I think it gave us a little more confidence on offense because he is one of our top defensive players. We also came out hitting from the start, and the biggest thanks, I think, goes out to our penalty killers since we were taking penalties left and right,” alternate captain Andrew Rodrigues said.

To win the game, Jimmy Nemeth had two goals and one assist and Hunter Woody had one goal and two assists.

“It was the first game since March of last year that Jimmy and I had played together and we helped lead the team. We also had a lot of help from our defense and from our goalie,” Woody said.

Goalie Aaron Peart was awarded the gold hard hat for the game.

“It (the gold hard hat tradition) started this year actually and it is given to the player who worked hardest in each game. It gives us extra motivation to work hard,” Woody said.

Mansfield hockey’s next game is March 4 at 8:45 against H.E.B.

“Beating our rival Martin last week will give us the motivation we need to make the playoffs and beat H.E.B.” Woody said.

The team is looking positively towards this next game and wants as much support as possible.

“We need more people to come to our games. We have a real chance at these playoffs,” Rodrigues said.

Orlando’s famous whale, Tillikum, pulled an aquatic trainer in the pool at the Shamu Stadium, and thrashed her to death. This is the third incident involving this whale that resulted in death or injury. Although, the event was tragic, we shouldn’t be surprised when an animal acts on it’s nature.

Whales are not like your everyday pets. Whales are undomesticated and if mistreated, can be very dangerous. I believe the confinement of those animals is wrong, and making them perform in shows to bring in revenue is even more cruel. From what I know, the whales at SeaWorld parks are not mistreated. They are fed well after their daily shows, and are given respect and compassion from the trainers. But it’s the 35 foot tank they are forced to live in day after day. Where’s the life in that?

It is not shocking to see the aggression in a whale after living years in a tank that doesn’t compare to the ocean. According to CNN, whales have been known to live up to 90 years, but when confined to the SeaWorld parks it is common to see them not make it past their early 20’s. Americans are naive to believe that a whale is happy performing for our entertainment, meanwhile reducing it’s life expectancy. I’d be much happier seeing a whale in it’s natural habitat living amongst it’s pods and eating a normal whale diet.

This doesn’t just apply to the whale incident, there have been accounts with aggressive monkeys, kangaroos, and bears. That’s right, bears. If you haven’t seen Grizzly Man, you should brush up on your knowledge of animal aggression. This just serves as another warning to those who can’t realize the ramifications that come along with animal testing and confinement, the animals do not like it and they will let you know!

When someone mentions JROTC, what do you think of?
The “ugly” green suits, the Sergeant in your face screaming, or maybe the famous hand salute.
Well whatever it is, JROTC might be about something completely different than what you have imagined. JROTC is a class for kids from kids. What this means is the class will be as fun as you make it. JROTC is not your average class. One of the things we do the least is sit in a chair and listen to a teacher yap all class. Instead we do hands-on activities that bring a fun environment to the classroom. JROTC provides the cadets with the latest technology and allows them to use them in a variety of activities. JROTC is not a class that you will just attend during school .JROTC extends out of the class room.
Being in this class will also give you the opportunity to help your community. Helping can be as simple as parking cars or teaching about the importance of reading. JROTC is not just another high school class. If you take advantage of it you will learn not only leadership skills but, skills like first aid, how to dress for a job interview, and how to be successful in your community. These skills will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Like mentioned above, JROTC is not your average class. Each cadet learns from different curriculum every year they are in JROTC. Most everything JROTC teaches is how to live a better life and keep a higher-paying career. In other words, how to get the most from yourself. During your first year you will learn about the history and purpose of JROTC. You will also learn the fundamentals of leadership.
Have you ever wondered how your brain functions or why you have different attitudes towards different things? JROTC’s curriculum will answer this question and many more. JROTC will teach you the structure of the brain and the function of each part. You will also be introduced to effective ways for you to learn things by using different types of thinking maps and graphic organizers. Where else would you use Electronic Monopoly to learn to manage your personal finances? Or video games to respond to CPS curriculum questions. Or even a writing stylus to interact with projectors from your seat? JROTC. The curriculum also includes Stefan Neilson’s winning colors which are the four colors that stand for different behavior clusters. There is the red adventurer, brown builder, green planner, and blue relater.
When you have completed your first year you will then go on to become a LET 2. During this year you will learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and how to perform CPR and First Aid. You will also learn what to do in case of other emergencies, like if someone is choking or has a heart attack.
As a LET 3, you will have the opportunity to create a resume and learn how to manage your money by using NEFE High School Financial Planning. You will also go through many “mock” job interviews. Best of all, most of this classwork can provide you with up to 14 college credits through Regionally-Accredited Universities.
During your time as a LET 4, you will learn about government, military history, and further your financial education.

JROTC always practice the Army values of LDRSHIP.
Loyalty
Duty
Respect
Selfless Service
Honor
Integrity
Personal Courage

JROTC also gives you the opportunity to work with things like a Smart Board or Google Earth. Google Earth is an application that will let you visit the world from behind a computer screen. Cadets have the opportunity to learn how to make internet podcasts or compete in internet scavenger hunts. You will also watch movies in which you will see examples of Winning Colors and different types of leadership styles. You will have the opportunity to earn ribbons and decorations for your uniform which will show your accomplishments and achievements. Ribbons can be earned by participating in community service, recruiting for JROTC class, and by achieving academic excellence in school (read Honor Roll). Cords and arch badges can be earned by participating in a variety of teams like Academic Challenge, Raider, and Color Guard, all which you to be UIL-eligible.

JROTC is a class that will not only help you if you are joining the military; JROTC will give you the knowledge to be successful in school, the workplace, and out in your community. Joining JROTC will give you the advantage of being one step ahead of everyone else. So now when you think of JROTC the first thing to come to mind will not be a salute, a sergeant or the green suit. Instead it will be the fun and exciting things that go on in and out of the classroom and what you can accomplish!

A common diagnosis for the end of the year slack portrayed by most high school seniors is “senioritis.” The signs are often observable, but is there a cure? The following is a guide to discover if you have become infected with senioritis or a key to discovering if close friends or family members have fallen into this lazy monster’s grip.

If you experience any of the following you may be a victim of senioritis:
-Punctuality is now a thing of the past
-Clothes that often resemble pajamas are a first choice outfit of the day
-Girl’s new motto: “Who needs makeup? Natural is the way to go.”
-Excuses for homework such as “my dog ate it” have now turned into the actual truth, “I just didn’t feel like doing it.”
-If you sleep in classes like office aid or community service
-If your keys are the only thing you bring to school
-Your only extracurricular activity is eating and sleeping
-If you know the exact number of days left until graduation, not including weekends.

If you show one or more of these signs, you are most likely affected by senioritis.
If you can claim three or more of these signs, you may be in trouble as the side effects may be irreversible. Slacking grades and zombie-like appearances can’t hold us down, so hang in there seniors, and stay classy.

If you’re expecting Shutter Island to be a hokey, over-done, thriller glorifying pretty-boy Leonardo Dicaprio, prepare to be disappointed. The movie isn’t scary at all, as many expect it to be– I wouldn’t even call it a thriller. Suspense? Yes. Mystery? Most definitely.

While I can’t reveal much without revealing it all, this movie will keep you guessing up until the last five minutes. It really pulls you in and makes you wonder. And although it involves murderers, paranoid schizophrenics, hurricanes, graveyards, Nazi death camps, rats, and blood, this isn’t in the least a horror movie. It’s actually quite in-depth: definitely a ‘mess-with-your-mind’-type film. Although the resolution is grand, the journey there is almost more satisfying.

In short, I wouldn’t recommend going to see the movie twice in a matter of three days as I did, but the ride it takes you on is well worth the eight bucks.

One more thing: For those of you with a weaker stomach, I suggest getting your popcorn after the opening scene.
