Student Jobs

Money makes the world go around, but in this economy, it is becoming harder and harder for students to earn some green. It seems like these days everyone knows someone looking for a job, but looking is only the first step. A lot of hard work is required to get a job. Junior Cristin Cavallo has been looking for a job for a few months now.

“Looking for jobs is very difficult in this economy,” Cavallo said, “People are laying off rather than hiring.”

Many students, like Cavallo, have had trouble finding jobs. Some Mansfield students were happy to give advice. Junior Jordan Englebert is a hostess at Texas Road House and believes it can literally “pay off” to be persistent about your application after you apply. Asking the manager of an establishment about the status of your application shows initiative and dedication.

“After you put in an application, you have to be kind of annoying, and go up to the place and ask if they got a chance to look at your application,” Englebert advised students looking for jobs.

Junior Nick Bresee works at Pink Berry and advises students looking for jobs to ask their friends and neighbors if they know businesses looking for work. Sometimes, friends can even give good recommendations for you to their bosses. Another tip Bresee had is to constantly apply. Take the time to fill out applications everywhere you can. The more you apply the more chances you have to be called back.

Mansfield students have a variety of reasons for working. Some plan to save their money for college or for other big future purchases. Other students have to work in order to pay for their car insurance or gas.

“My parents make me pay for everything-insurance, gas, etc.” Bresee said.

Bresee decided to start working after he started driving, and needed money to pay for his car and adventures with his friends.

Students should consider working to earn job experience in addition to earning money. It is important to build up your resume with good recommendations and skills. You are more likely to be hired if you have been previously employed or have contacts that know you well.

“I feel like working will teach me responsibility and give me experience for my future,” Cavallo said.

Students gain not only experience working but can also learn important skills that they will need later in life. Learning to work with customers, be patient, and be on time, are just some skills that can be gained through work.

“I think students need to learn how to manage their money before they get thrown out into the world on their own,” Englebert said.

Working students are often forced to learn good time management skills as well. Teenagers have to juggle school, friends, clubs, and other activities along with their work requirements. It can become a lot to handle, and students have to find ways to fit everything into their limited time.

“I got my work schedule first and worked around that,” Bresee said.

Many students believe that the benefits and experiences gained through work can outweigh the hardships of managing your schedule. Jobs can also have special perks, depending on the type of business. Many stores give their employees discounts, and restaurant employees can get food at a discount as well.

As a general rule, the more effort you put into looking and applying, the better your chances will be in getting a position. Hopefully these tips have helped, and good luck in your endeavors!
