See You At The Pole

Unless you have late arrival or just frequently have a difficult time waking up before the sky even begins to show its first streaks of light, you might have noticed a sizable crowd of people gathered around the flagpole on September 24.

See You At The Pole is a student led day of prayer that is held on the fourth Wednesday of September since 1990. The movement originated in Burleson, Texas and has grown to a nationwide event with this year’s theme being #NeverStopPraying.

“I just enjoy seeing all the faces,” senior Emily Edwards said. “You don’t really wear your religion on your sleeve at school so it’s just nice to see all kinds of new faces.”

According to syatp.com, a flagpole was chosen as a meeting place due to the fact that nearly every school has a flagpole, therefore providing students across the nation an easily identifiable meeting point. This year, students met at the flagpole in front of school at 6:25 in the morning to sing, read scripture, pray, and listen to a short message.

“It was an awesome sight to see people gathered together for one reason,” senior Joanne Yoo said. “My favorite part was when we shouted ‘God is good’ with Dayton [another student leader]. It was a good start to my day.”

Edwards, who is involved with a student religious organization that was formerly called R.E.A.C.H, found herself leading the event this year.

“Last year I led the message also but there was another girl who put it all together,” Edwards said. “This year I just thought that it was my turn to put it all together. It really wasn’t very hard, I just went to the FCA meeting and talked to Coach Walker. I just let him know that I was going to lead a message and then just found some people to do some worship. It was an enjoyable morning.”
