HeforShe

On September 20, 2014 the Harry Potter sensation(other than Harry Potter), Emma Watson was officially introduced to the world in her new role as UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador. The movement she is “starring” in is called HeforShe, and since its debut, it has made people question their perspective, and shed light on constantly overlooked social topics.

The campaign’s logo and theme itself represents what it stands for. The colors are pink (to represent females of course) and black (for males), with intertwined arrows to represent the equality and dependance they have together.

HeforShe has been launched to achieve gender equality and to support feminism. It was originally conceived as a struggle led only by women for women. In recent years, men have begun to stand up in addressing inequalities and discrimination faced by women and girls. They have been spreading the word through their hit website heforshe.org, means of social media, and Emma Watson’s phenomenal speech that has convinced and touched many.

In her speech, she explains how she came to be so passionate about the cause, what it exactly is, and clarifies misinterpretations about feminism. She even shares personal experiences describing how she questioned gender-based assumptions.

“I was confused of being called bossy for wanting to direct the plays we put on at home for our parents”, she shares humbly. She also gives us a piece of her mind by saying,”I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my body. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.” She explains that feminism by definition is gender equality, and not man-hatred.

Multiple celebrities have also been involved with HeforShe. People like Harry Styles, Logan Lerman, Tom Hiddleston, Russell Crowe, Peter Gallagher posted supportive pictures. Others like Simon Pegg tweeted, “Husband to a wife, father to a daughter, son to a mother, you bet I’m on board.” Emma’s speech went so viral that it reached the President, and he commented,”Lifting women up lifts up our economy and lifts up our country..we’ve got to make sure that..somebody is standing up for them.” Prince harry even stated,”Real men treat women with dignity and give them the respect they deserve.”

Despite Emma’s obvious nervousness, she makes a complicated concept made simple. She mentions that the men are the beginning of everything, and says,”I’m inviting you to step forward to ask yourself, if not me, who? If not now, when?” Emma’s speech was undoubtedly successful, and because of it, the movement gained 82% of twitter followers, 305% on Facebook, and 3,500% on Instagram. The numbers speak for themselves!
