Ms.Knight is one of MHS’s most beloved math teachers due to her bubbly personality and dedication to helping her students. Not only is she the perfect example of a teacher who strives for excellence, but she has a very interesting past too!

Where did you grow up?

That’s almost as hard to answer as “Where are you from?” I was born in the Philippines; so you can say the English is not my first language.
My family emigrated to the States (straight to East Texas) when I was 10 years old. I have mostly been in the DFW area after high school.

What type of student were you in high school?

High school was my first experience at public school, so I was the new kid in town. I might have been one of the few, if not only, Asian student in the school. Some might have thought that I was an exchange student. I can’t really say that I relate to a label, but I wanted high grades and was encouraged to join as many organizations as I could, so I did.

What clique were you in?

None, but I took part in extracurricular activities. I lived a sheltered life.

What kind of activities were you involved in in high school?

Basketball, track for long distance but not cross country, drill team (Whitehouse First Ladies), Yearbook, photo journalism, UIL Number Sense, UIL Spelling. NHS, and Key Club. (I tried volleyball but I couldn’t spike it.)

What kind of activities were you involved in in college?

Studied, worked out, made friends, found my love for live music in Denton, Texas!

What kind of music did you listen to in high school?

I liked different genres of music, but I really liked Rock Ballads. Queensryche, Guns N’Roses, Madonna, New Kids on the Block, BackStreet Boys, Will Smith, MC Hammer, INXS, Extreme, Sinead O’Connor, C&C Music Factory, Metallica, Garth Brooks, Bonnie Raitt, Elvis Pressley, and; anything else that went with a Drill Team routine.

What kind of music did you listen to in college?

I would play classical music in the background when I was studying. Tripping Daisy was my 1st live music, No Doubt, Spice Girls, Ricky Martin, Shania Twain, U2 (1st concert)., Depeche Mode. After college, JASON MRAZ!!

What was your most embarrassing moment in high school?

Hmmm, I’m sure I’ve had a few, but I’ve conveniently forgotten them.
My 80s/90s hair?
My English teacher wanted my class to re-enact The Taming of the Shrew. She picked me for the Shrew. I froze! Theater was not for me.

Where did you go to college and what did you major in?

I took dual credit classes at Tyler Junior College during high school. I went to Texas Woman’s University in Denton for my Bachelor’s Degree then to Hardin-Simmons University for my Master’s Degree.

Most memorable word of advice from a high school teacher and college professor?

HS: Focus on your goals! College: Tests are not just about the grade. Use it as a learning experience.

Did you always plan on being a teacher?

I didn’t think so. Although, when I used to babysit my brothers and cousins over the summers, I would always try to put them on a schedule of when they could play, snack, watch shows, and take a nap.

Words of advice of your own for high school students?

Keep an open mind. Find real friends and stay in touch. You can make a different choice. Find a cause, something you care about, something you like to do, and be a productive member of society. High school doesn’t just prepare you for college; it prepares you for life… how to work with people, how to think for yourself. I’ve given out so many advice and analogies that I would love for former students to collaborate and put it all together into a book.

If you’re married, why do you go by Ms. Knight?

When I first started teaching at MHS, my husband and mother-in-law also taught here. Sherri Knight was Mrs. Knight; I was Ms. Knight.   The real reason to Ms. versus. Mrs.… I don’t believe I should be treated differently based on my marital status.

What’s something interesting about you that people don’t know?

I hold 2 Guinness World Records from 2012 and 2014 for largest Tinikling dance with the most people. Here’s the link!
