A local rap group, named JVNLS, was formed in mid-December 2013 by a group of juniors from MHS and Legacy. They began putting out music on Sound Cloud and gradually increased their popularity over the next year. Even though they have only been around for a year their music certainly sounds experienced and well put out. Their recent EP No Name Yet carries out with great lyrical content on “Riding Through My City” and “Murder She Wrote” with catchy hooks and instrumentals that are crisp and very trap driven. The fan favorite “Used To” samples Doja Cat’s “No Police” with a sultry chorus and catchy verses strengthening the songs content.

“We’re really trying to start a movement and we are trying to get everyone involved,” said senior Brian Rainey. “Even though we are the main people we still want to reach out to artists, photographers, people who make videos and who can make JVNLS better.”

The main purpose for JVNLS is to create a movement for youth to join and actively participate in. This includes singing, producing, creating visuals for the group, handling equipment or just for support when the group needs it. They reach out through their Twitter fan base and try their best to include their works, such as past collaborations with aspiring moviemaker junior Daniel Kelly and fellow rap group, Almighty Movement.

“We help each other to get to the top with critiquing each others work and trying to make each other better at what they do,” said senior CJ Battle.

Their artistic growth has increased since the beginning from freestyles to their own songs with a unique touch added to it. They make sure to turn the tables and keep listeners hooked with surprising new sounds.

“With us a track is never complete even after we write it, like after I write I want Bray (Brian) to hear it, Matt to hear it and let them add on to it and give out ideas to put into the track and make it better,” said senior Zach Gray.

Each member leaves a distinct sound and tone for their part, establishing their own significant sound. They rap with experience and meaning in “Used to” highlighting the rough times that they go through. Making music is more than a hobby for this group, it’s a career path.

“After I graduate this year I’m taking a year off of school to focus mainly music and making money for the group,” said senior Matt Kelly.

With new merchandise coming out they put a lot of effort to spread their popularity. The members devote themselves to the group trying to improve their worth and how potential record labels might perceive them in the future.

“We [want to play in] SXSW next year, or just [continue] growing out of our box doing more shows so we get more recognition,” said seniors Zach Gray and Brian Rainey.

JVNLS has a big musical career ahead of themselves and they choose to include their fans every step of their way. Come and support JVNLS at the MHS Talent Show on April 16th at 7:00pm.
