The Faces Behind the Voices

Some of us wait for the announcements to know how much the latest shirts are being sold for, where the next football game is going to be, or if an event is going to be cancelled. Others wait for them because they can steal a conversation or two, but most of us don’t really know what it takes to do the announcements. Well, our school announcers Andrew Loh and Niyyah Barber have answered a couple of the questions that come across most of our minds.

“As senior class president, it is one of my duties to do the morning announcements,” said Andrew Loh.”Although it is an obligation, I don’t mind doing them! It is not considered an extracurricular activity, but it is linked to Student Council in the sense that the Senior Class president and the Student Body president have the responsibility of doing the morning announcements.”

As Student Body president, Niyyah Barber accompanies Loh during the fourth block announcements.

“To be honest, it wasn’t something I ever thought about doing; however, I have come to really enjoy it,” Barber said.” It is a lot of fun and I look forward to it every morning.”

Announcements range from sports scores, rules, and up to date information regarding students.

“To be on the announcements, all a club has to do is email Mrs. McMullen with what they want to say, and as long as they send in it by 8:30, she will put it on that days announcements,” said Barber. “Clubs can also make requests to have their announcement run for a certain amount of time. For example, every day for the week leading up to an event.”

A common misconception that students assume about the announcements is that the announcers are responsible for the mistakes made.

“We don’t write the announcements! We read them as is, from what is written by the clubs. So if the wording is kind of funny, or it doesn’t quite make sense, we still have to go with it,”  said Barber.

One thing that Barber and Loh both agreed on is the aggravation they have about the PA system’s occasional malfunctions.

“The PA system is kind of quirky, so sometimes it cuts off while we’re in the middle of talking, then Andrew and I have to run to another office to finish before the bell rings,” said Barber.

Despite the hassle of having to run through the counseling office and down the spiral staircase if the PA system cuts off, Loh does look forward to his favorite part of the announcements.

“I do love saying ‘GOOD MORNING TIGERS and have a GRRRRRREAT day’ every day,” Loh said.
