After 26 years of service, MISD Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Cantu retired on Feb. 26, and the school board selected MHS graduate Dr. Tiffanie Spencer to serve in the position through a selection process with the guidance of third-party company JD Holding. Dr. Spencer will hold a discussion with parents and students at Mansfield High School on 4/15, from 6-7 p.m.
“Being able to give back to the same community that poured so much into me is incredibly meaningful,” Spencer said. “I am excited to work alongside our students, teachers, staff and families to continue building opportunities that help every student succeed.”
As Dr. Spencer steps in as superintendent, she outlined a vision for her planned impact through leadership. The role requires direct communication and coordination with the community, and she said she plans to address these aspects head on.
“My vision for Mansfield ISD centers on what I call Leading with HEART,” she said. “That means ensuring high-quality and equitable learning for every student, building strong partnerships with families and the community, supporting engaged and committed teachers and staff, providing appropriate and differentiated support for students and families and maintaining transparent and effective practices that build trust.”
Dr. Spencer reaffirmed her commitment to this ideal, explaining how it supports students long into their post-graduate years.
“When we lead with HEART, we focus on people, relationships and preparing students not only for graduation, but for success in whatever path they choose after high school,” she said.
As a Mansfield HS graduate, Dr. Spencer said she’s very grateful to be able to lead in a district she once grew up in. Spencer took an active role while at MHS.
“I had a great high school experience at Mansfield High School,” she said. “I played on the freshman and JV basketball teams until I was a junior, which taught me a lot about teamwork and perseverance.”
Her extracurricular impact was not limited to only basketball, however, as she played a part in building the foundation of MHS’s step team.
“I was also one of the founding members of the first MHS step team,” she said. “We competed in events across the DFW metroplex, and it was exciting to be part of something new.”
Dr. Spencer also contributed to student media at MHS. Being a member of the yearbook staff, she said this helped her connect with the community at a young age.
“I also had the opportunity to serve on the yearbook committee, which was an amazing experience,” she said. “We participated in many school and community events so we could capture those moments and reflect them in the yearbook.”
As Dr. Spencer steps into the role as superintendent, she said her focus is on the vital aspects ensuring district growth.
“For a district to continue growing and improving, it must be grounded in fairness, empathy and meeting students where they are,” she said. “Every student comes to school with different strengths, needs and experiences, and our responsibility is to ensure they all have the support necessary to succeed.”
She said accommodating students’ needs involves setting policies in place to adapt and work with their families, enabling them to grow in character and expand their capabilities.
“That means creating systems that provide differentiated support for students and families, listening to the needs of our community and making decisions with empathy and care,” she said. “When we focus on fairness and truly understanding the people we serve, we create an environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.”
