There is nothing more exciting than that one week in the school year that is devoted to homecoming, except the mums. Mums and garters are the are a staple piece of every homecoming . The tradition is quite simple, the girl gives her homecoming date a garter while the girl receives a mum from her date, usually with coordinating or school colors.

“Mums and garters are for the purpose of claiming someone as your own territory, despite that I think celebrating homecoming is fun and harmless.” said sophomore Madison Price.

If you ask anyone about mums and garters from northern states or maybe just anyone not from Texas, they will ask either what it is or why we spend so much time on a portable parade.

“In Texas we are way more flashy with who we are with.” said sophomore Simone Bergeron .

All mums vary in size from large to extremely unwearable. Their visual appeal being the only concern to the mum wearers.

“The traditional way is supposed to be where freshmen have the smallest and seniors have the biggest and theirs have silver or white.” said sophomore Hailey Hatfield.

Majority of the people treat this tradition very highly, but there are other people who disagree with the excess school spirit that seeps in during homecoming.

“I feel like mums are a major distraction because in the hallway the bells are loud” said senior Cj Battle.

The accessories vary from normal to outrageous depending on time, effort and how much money they paid as well. Mums signify “bigger is better in Texas” perfectly.

“The worst mum accessories are cowbells because they make so much noise.” said sophomore Glory Dan-Dukor.

The only challenging part is their creation. This task needs creativity, money, time, and patience. It can be time consuming and tedious, but yet rewarding.

“My mom made it [mum] and it was annoying because you had to make it look all even and stuff,” said sophomore Kyrstin Linex.

Regardless whether you have a date that surprised you with lunch and roses to homecoming, or if you bought your mum the day before, mums and garters are that one high school tradition that will resonate with you years to come.
