As part of the school’s yearly testing, juniors will take the SAT on Wednesday.
“The best part of the day is offering our students a chance to take a free SAT test and for many, take a standardized college admissions test for the first time,” counselor Chrystal Barnett said. “Statistics show that each time a student takes an SAT, they become more familiar with the test, and their scores improve.”
All students in 11th grade are eligible to take the test. They will receive their scores in late April.
“I want to get the best benefit from college applications,” junior Aubriell Jacob said. “It can be bad for people who aren’t good at taking test, but I believe it’s essential.”
While every student can take the SAT multiple times, the school’s SAT day is the only time a student can take one for free. All other SAT tests must be scheduled through the College Board website and cost $68 each.
“At Mansfield High School, we believe in breaking down barriers for our students and providing them with the tools and support needed to succeed in life after high school,” Barnett said. “Even if students are not planning to apply to college, or are only planning to apply to colleges that are test optional, the SAT can help get them to where they want to go.”
The SAT is still required at some colleges and universities and is typically submitted with the application.
“I think it’s stupid that all of the work I’ve done throughout my high school career comes down to this SAT test,” senior Roxye Pierce said. “I can pass the AP Precal exam, but then I get a 1270 on the SAT.”
The district offers SAT prep courses for sophomores and juniors who are getting ready for the test. The district offered the courses for this year on February 8 and 22.
“First, I would like all students to know they should go into each exam with a positive mindset and give it their best,” data specialist Laci Huggins said. “Secondly, I would love for students to understand that a test score does not define them. There are times students have an off day due to other circumstances going on in their lives or they may not be great test takers. It does not mean they are not capable of great things and can be successful at whatever they put their minds to.”
