The Texas Education Agency released its annual school ratings in August and ranked Mansfield High School highly because of rigorous curriculum with numerous AP courses, a high graduation rate, strong student performance in math and reading and high college enrollment rates.
“To get good results you have to focus on culture and focus on supporting teachers and teachers who support students,” Principal Kourtney Gates said. “School is not just about learning, but about being involved. Students needing to be connected is the main priority.”
Positive reviews also highlight professional and compassionate teachers who provide excellent instruction and mentorship, fostering student success in both academics and other extracurricular activities.
“I have worked closely with teachers in their PLCs (professional learning communities) to look at data and target areas that need attention,” Academic Associate Principal Christy Miller said. “I get most excited about the doors that open for our students when we are growing academically.”
Among the most commonly taken AP courses, the English program is very popular. The literary department consistently receives above average proficiency rates and widespread class engagement.
“I’ve noticed much more participation in literary courses like AP English III,” junior Prince Olowookere said. “Teachers forming connections with their students helps them excel in their academics.”
The department’s success can be attributed to its experienced group of teachers, who actively work to keep class engaging.
“Teachers such as Mrs. Bridges and Ms. Boydsten encourage students to openly communicate in class, which can positively impact their proficiency,” Prince said. “I’ve seen a lot more communication between students regarding their coursework, which might aid in proficiency scores.”
